Central Snaps Germantowns’ streak at 69

On Tuesday night, the Germantown Warhawks (12-1) traveled to Brookfield Central Lancers (13-0) for one of the most anticipated regular season games in recent memory.  The boys’ basketball teams were ranked No. 1 and 2 in the WI state rankings before this matchup, with Germantown ranked 21st in the nation on the DigitalSports National Basketball Rankings.

It was a sellout crowd of about 2,000 at Central and both teams were not going to disappoint. From tip-off, both teams fought tooth and nail for the advantage.

Germantown was the favorite to win and players Jake Showalter and Lamonte’ Bearden combined for 12pts to give their team a 4pt. lead going into the second quarter at 16-12.

To open the second, Bearden scored twice now giving the Warhawks a 20-12 lead.  The game heated up though when Central’s offense surged for a 19-7 run with points from Elijah Goodman and Brad Newman to give the Lancers a 31-27 lead heading into halftime.

The Warhawks were able to regroup on offense, but the defense seemed to be a little drained in the third period.  Germantown was able to win the quarter with a 15-11 run, but this left the game tied 42-42 heading into the final period.

Going into this matchup with the game on the line, it wasn’t a surprise to see seniors Riley LaChance and Goodman take over the game. Central lead 56-55 in the final minutes of the game when Goodman went to the free throw line sinking one of two shots.

The Lancers were put back on defense as time winded down, but got the ball back quick.  The Lancers’ Newman took off down court, but had his shot blocked.  Goodman was the closest player, and as he hit the layup was fouled for an “And 1”.

He missed the free throw. Then Newman was fouled and missed two free throws, but  on the second Goodman grabbed the rebound, was fouled to give Central a 61-55 lead with 1:09 to play.  LaChance hit one of two free throws, Goodman hit two more and then LaChance hit an alley-oop pass to Caleb Mortag, a 66-55 lead with 13 seconds left.

LaChance had 13 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter, and Goodman had seven of his 19 points to spark the late run. Germantown’s Lamonte Bearden led all scorers with 24 points.

Brookfield outscored Germantown, 26-16, in the fourth quarter, to win 68-58 and snapped the Germantown Warhawks’ 69-game winning streak.

Brookfield is now ranked #1 in Wisconson, and looks to make a statement for next week’s DigitalSports National Basketball Ranking.  They will be taking on Marquette University High School on January 17th, hoping to keep their undefeated season alive.
